Females could expect job opportunities in Western Canada as domestic servants. Males could find work on farms. The demand for domestic servants in Canada was so great that the government paid British and European booking agents a bonus of $5 a head for domestics who came to Canada to find similar work. In 1913 Canadian agents in Britain distributed 57,700 copies of Women's Work in Canada, describing the Duties, Wages, Conditions and Opportunities for Domestics in the Dominion. It said that general servants earned between $10. and $25 a month in Canada, cooks earned between $12 and $25 and housekeepers between $30 and $40. The working day began at 6 or 7 A.M. and end at 6 or 7 P.M. Would your character be interested in such work?
